Mothers’ Lifestyle Predicts When Offspring will have First Heart Attack or Stroke

Previous research has shown that parents pass on health to their offspring through both genes and shared environment/lifestyle. This was the first study to examine whether parents’ heart health was associated with the age at which offspring develop cardiovascular disease. In addition, it investigated the influence of each parent separately.

The study was conducted in offspring-mother-father trios from the Framingham Heart Study — a total of 1,989 offspring, 1,989 mothers, and 1,989 fathers. Offspring were enrolled at an average age of 32 years and followed over 46 years (1971-2017) for the development of cardiovascular events. “Crucially, the study followed offspring into most of their adult life when heart attacks and strokes actually occur,” explained Dr. Muchira

  1. Very interesting. I know in my case my mother quit smoking while she was pregnant with me. But Resumed immediately after delivery. While I lived at home until age 18, she provided an excellent home-cooked diet. But our family never exercised. My mother smoked heavily and drank heavily. She developed Hypertension in her 40s and atrial fib in her 80s. She died from a cardiac event at age 86. I on the other hand developed hypertension in my 50s along with atrial fibrillation. I never smoked, but did drink heavily in my 20s. I started exercising regularly in my 30s. I would love to live to be 86, or even older than that if I continue to be active, alert, and in good health.

    • Many of us have a parent who indulged to excess and followed the path ourselves until we got smart. My father passed at age 67 from end stage over-indulgence. My mother passed at 87 or 88 after spending her final years in nursing home care. I definitely hope to have my mother’s lifestyle effect and not my father’s lifestyle effect.
