Modifiable Risk Factors

Approximately 60% of all liver cancers in the United States are caused by potentially modifiable risk factors, the researchers indicate. For example, it has been estimated that among Medicare recipients, the largest proportion of cases of HCC, at 32%, are caused by metabolic disorders, including obesity. A smaller proportion of cases of HCC are caused by hepatitis C virus infection (21%), excessive alcohol intake (13%), and smoking (9%).

Coronary Artery Calcium and Risk of Dementia in MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis)

Baseline CAC had a graded positive association with dementia risk. Compared with no CAC, CAC score of 1 to 400, 401 to 1000, and ≥1001 had increased risk of dementia by 23%, 35%, and 71%, respectively, (Ptrend=0.026) after adjustment. 1 SD higher log2[CAC+1] was associated with 24% (95% confidence interval, 8%–41%; P=0.002) increase in dementia risk.

Study finds tens of millions of Americans drink alcohol at dangerously high levels – National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Nearly 32 million adults in the United States (13 percent of the U.S. population aged 18 and older) consumed more than twice the number of drinks considered binge drinking on at least one occasion, according to a 2013 survey that asked about past-year drinking. This higher level of drinking is associated with increased health and safety risks. A report of the findings is online in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (link is external). The study was conducted by researchers at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), part of the National Institutes of Health.

The first patient was a 72-year-old white Buddhist nun who presented with extreme weight loss. “You get afraid of eating because you don’t know what it’ll do to you,” said the patient in a video clip. “Eventually I was afraid to do anything, so I did nothing.”
