Pizza Delicious Bought An Ad On Facebook. How’d They Do? : Planet Money : NPR

Those ads went viral. They got twice the usual number of click-thrus, on average. The ad showed up more than 700,000 times. Basically, everyone in New Orleans on Facebook saw it. Twice. Pizza Delicious got close to twenty times the number of Facebook fans they usually get in two days. The guys were stoked.

I’ll cut to the chase so you don’t have to read or listen to the entire article.  It didn’t work.

After a long night of asking every single customer where they found out about Pizza Delicious, not one said it was through Facebook.

Maybe at some point, the new Pizza Delicious fans will show up and buy some pizza. But social advertising is so new that nobody knows for sure. It’s still unproven, untested and largely unstudied.

Update –

I read the article first, then listened to the podcast.  Listen to the podcast, it’s funnier than hell.

The Potential Harm of Social Media

Just recently a child was hospitalized after putting a bottle rocket in his pants and others were hospitalized after holding cinnamon in their mouth for a minute. The danger is that these kids may or may not know that these stunts are dangerous. It may not be evident that a video seen online is not a credible source…

It worries me that we are being accustomed to quick messages and short hand typing that we will soon become a society of less social individuals and poor communication skills.

What is Bach Worth? – The Domino Project

What is Bach worth? – The Domino Project.

The real question is how much would you pay for 9 hours of classical music?  Would you pay 99 cents?

I checked Amazon today and the deal is still on.  I clicked and bought.  Amazon is hoping that a lot of people will click and buy.  The company is clearly betting on a social media referral strategy, hoping that enough people will email, link, blog, etc., about this offer to drive sales.

Hopefully Amazon will share the results of their experiment.

Facebook Is Making Us Miserable – Harvard Business Review

Facebook is negatively affecting what psychology Professor Jeffrey Parker refers to as “the closeness properties of friendship.”

via Facebook Is Making Us Miserable – Daniel Gulati – Harvard Business Review.

Please note I am not the author of the HBR blog article so please don’t shoot the messenger.  I’m neither a huge fan nor harsh critic of what the pundits term as “the dominant communication platform of the future”.  I simply don’t use Facebook a lot.  I don’t have a smart phone.  I have a dumb phone.  I don’t use an iPad.  I use an old-fashioned laptop if necessary.

If anyone wishes to communicate with me, email or phone works just fine thank you.

Or we could meet in person!

And Now For Something Completely Different

Hand-crafted slide guitars eye-catching, but no sales yet | The Post and Courier, Charleston SC – News, Sports, Entertainment

This story from The Post and Courier fascinated me.  For me, this story about Michael Walworth is not just about the unique musical instruments he builds.  This story is about the recession and redemption, creativity and faith, a man just one short step away from fate.

This post is a test of the power of social media.  If you found this story and want to help Micheal sell a guitar, please pass it along.

Think Brand Strategy NOT Social Media Strategy

Sanders Says – You don’t need a social media strategy

Sanders Says – Brand strategy first, social media tactics second

You don’t need a social media strategy – You need a brand strategy that leverages social media.  Don’t get off the brand strategy just because there’s a new communications channel, that’s how you lose the plot as a brand.  Technology is the tail, not the dog.

Here are two links to two blog posts by Tim Sanders.  If your company is struggling with social media these articles will help.
