There is a significant association between lowering uric acid in patients with high levels and a reduction of their mortality from cardiovascular disease, researchers said here.
During the study period, hyperuricemia patients who were treated with urate lowering drugs such as allopurinol achieved a 44% reduction in death caused by heart disease and a 58% reduction in deaths caused by stroke (P<0.001 for both), according to Jiunn-Horng Chen, MD, PhD, of China Medical University, Taichung, Republic of China (Taiwan).
Smoking and Dementia Risk
Conclusions – In this large cohort, heavy smoking in midlife was associated with a greater than 100% increase in risk of dementia, AD, and VaD more than 2 decades later. These results suggest that the brain is not immune to long-term consequences of heavy smoking.

Dabigatran = Pradaxa for Atrial Fibrillation
The anticoagulant drug dabigatran (Pradaxa) was cleared for market for preventing strokes and thrombosis in patients with atrial fibrillation, the FDA announced.
Hospital Admissions for Drug Reactions = 65,000 Annually
The report, released by the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) found that there was a major increase in hospital discharges from effects of both prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as illegal drugs, among adults ages 45 and older.
Hospital admissions for drug-related conditions grew from about 30,000 per year to more than 65,000 per year — a 117% increase — between 1997 and 2008 for people ages 45 to 64, according to the report.
