Even The Price of Beer Is Rigged

Beer is big business in Germany. In terms of global beer production in 2012 (the 2013 rankings haven’t come out yet), Germany ranked in fifth place with 94.6 million hectoliters. OK, fifth place is lousy for a country that prides itself in its beer culture – but hey, there aren’t that many people in Germany. The four leading countries all have much larger populations: China (490.2 million hectoliters), the US (229.3 million hectoliters), Brazil (132.8 million hectoliters), and Russia (97.4 million hectoliters).

America’s Workers: Stressed Out, Overwhelmed, Totally Exhausted – The Atlantic

I asked Peter Senge about that. How to try to live and work in a sane way when you’re in the middle of insanity: a voracious workplace that will eat you alive, friends and neighbors who raise eyebrows if you pull your kids out of some competitive activity. He gave some important advice: Create your own community, a network of like-minded people. Humans are wired to conform—that’s why these cultural pressures, however silly they may seem, wield such power over us. So find a group that fits your values that would make you happier to conform to.

The October Surprise that Could Cripple the Practice of Medicine

In an effort to push specificity to the limit, some ICD-10 codes have gotten silly. Codes exist for being hurt at the opera (Y92253), walking into a lamppost (Y92253), walking into a second lamppost (W2202XD), getting sucked into a jet engine (V97.33XD), and being burned due to water skis on fire (V91.07XD).

But this is not the Achilles heel of the ICD-10.

First, medical practices and hospitals must know and have all of these 68 thousand codes readily available to add to the medical record in order to bill correctly and hope to be paid.
