Organic Cat Litter Chief Suspect In Nuclear Waste Accident – NPR

Organic Cat Litter Chief Suspect In Nuclear Waste Accident : The Two-Way : NPR.

“It was the wrong kitty litter,” says James Conca, a geochemist in Richland, Wash., who has spent decades in the nuclear waste business.

It turns out there’s more to cat litter than you think. It can soak up urine, but it’s just as good at absorbing radioactive material.

Happy Mother’s Day 2014

Happy Mother’s Day to all.

Two months ago I wrote about shifting my emphasis on this blog away from medical news and information for life underwriting professionals to more of a writer’s blog.  The shift was to highlight my transition to professional writing services for hire.  Since I posted that change in direction, I’ve found my posts completely unchanged in character and broad content.  I’m still linking to great pieces of medical news.  I’ve not written anything.

Change we must.  I just need to figure out my time commitments and find some of that elusive time to write more.

USGS: OK Fracking Has Increased Chance Of ‘Damaging Quake’

USGS: Okla. Fracking Has Increased Chance Of ‘Damaging Quake’ : The Two-Way : NPR.

The USGS and Oklahoma Geological Survey issued a joint statement on Friday, citing a dramatic spike in magnitude 3.0 temblors, especially since October 2013.

The agencies said “183 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater occurred in Okla. from October 2013 through April 14, 2014. This compares with a long-term average from 1978 to 2008 of only two magnitude 3.0 or larger earthquakes per year. As a result of the increased number of small and moderate shocks, the likelihood of future, damaging earthquakes has increased for central and north-central Oklahoma.”

And the Guthrie wildfire was approximately 12 miles from my house.

I’m trapped…

The Recruiter: Hot Spots

The Recruiter: Hot Spots.

The supply and demand scale for emergency physicians is obviously going to be tipped in favor of physicians for many years to come. If you’re an ABEM/AOBEM certified physician with a solid track record, typically the job hunt can be akin to achieving celebrity status – “Everybody wants you – everybody needs you”.  In most parts of the country, a well-qualified EP is highly likely to secure a position at the hospital of his or her choice.

If you’re an underwriter reading this, sorry this link is not for you.

If you’re related to me and starting your emergency medicine residency in June then, Bud this link’s for you.

Even The Price of Beer Is Rigged

Beer is big business in Germany. In terms of global beer production in 2012 (the 2013 rankings haven’t come out yet), Germany ranked in fifth place with 94.6 million hectoliters. OK, fifth place is lousy for a country that prides itself in its beer culture – but hey, there aren’t that many people in Germany. The four leading countries all have much larger populations: China (490.2 million hectoliters), the US (229.3 million hectoliters), Brazil (132.8 million hectoliters), and Russia (97.4 million hectoliters).

Five Things You Didn’t Know About Ear Wax !!!

Asian and non-Asian ears produce different types of earwax according to scientists at the Monell Institute in Philadelphia. Chromosome 16 is home to the “wet” or “dry” gene for earwax – with the wet variant dominating.

A small change in the gene ABCC11 is related to both the dry-type earwax and also for reduced underarm body odour found in Chinese, Japanese and Korean individuals.

The American study measured the concentration of 12 volatile organic compounds found in earwax – in groups of East Asian and white men.

In 11 out of the 12 compounds the Caucasian earwax had greater amounts of odorous compounds.
