I Decided Not to be a Writer – I’m OK With That

Nearly half of Americans would have trouble finding $400 to pay for an emergency. I’m one of them.

Neal Gabler is a visiting professor in the MFA Creative Writing and Literature Program at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. He is the author of a forthcoming biography of Edward Kennedy and five other books.

Ever since my undergraduate days I’ve dreamed of being a writer.  Not only do I love to write but I have to write.  I write almost every day.  I just don’t get paid to write.  Having just read Neal Gabler’s article I feel the decision to pursue a different line of work and become a non-writer was a good decision.  I just never thought that 40 years later I would be doing what I did for a living as a 22 year old kid fresh out of college.

No regrets.

My personal definition of a good day has changed.

A good day is a day without earthquakes.

“We don’t need to spend days ladling out food in the soup kitchen and traveling overseas to an impoverished land. We can make a difference every single day in the everyday life that we live.  The universe we live in is billions of years old. Our lives here are a blink of an eye in comparison. Many of us travel this journey merely existing. Others live the adventure and find the purpose. The difference we make in the lives of others is tremendous. Yet, many of us fail to react to this calling.”

“They’re living in a cocoon bubble, and the university is validating their fears. If these students are frightened by someone writing ‘Trump 2016’ on campus, they need to see a psychiatrist.”

Harvey Klehr professor of political science at Emory

We are starting to see some of these young men and women leave the bubble and figure out how to make it in this world.

From what I’ve witnessed psychiatry and counseling may not be enough to help these victims of a higher educational system gone awry.
