Plague in Domestic Cats — Idaho, 2016 – MMWR

Cat-associated human plague cases, including fatalities, have been reported in the western United States since 1977 (3). Compared with dogs, cats are highly susceptible to plague illness and can transmit disease to humans directly through exposure to respiratory droplets and infectious body fluids associated with bites or scratches (1).

Immunotherapy drugs have been regarded as a breakthrough in cancer treatment, but as their use grows, doctors are finding that they pose serious risks.   A separate paper found that 30% of patients experienced “interesting, rare, or unexpected side effects,” with a quarter of the reactions described as severe, life-threatening, or requiring hospitalization. Some patients have died…Problems with the pancreas have been particularly unusual, causing patients typically aged 50 years and older to lose insulin production all at once.

Thunderstorm Asthma

It was only after it settled down that we realised what we had achieved. In a 24 hour period our emergency department would typically see around 200 patients. During “Thunderstorm Asthma,” over a 12-hour period between 7pm and 7 am we treated 296 patients; 208 of them had respiratory symptoms. Of these patients 170 went home, 36 were admitted including four that went to the intensive care unit. The peak occurred at 9pm, when 43 patients arrived in an hour.  It wasn’t until 2am before our numbers dropped below 20 an hour.
