FDA Warns Chantix May Up Heart Risk
A meta-analysis ordered by the agency and conducted by drugmaker Pfizer found a higher occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events — including death, MI, and stroke — with the drug than with placebo.
The FDA noted, however, that such events were uncommon in both groups, and the increased risk wasn’t statistically significant.

Diet’s Role in Lowering Risk of Repeat Heart Attacks – WSJ.com
People with the healthiest diets—those with the highest intakes of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and a higher intake of fish relative to meat poultry and eggs—were 35% less likely to die from a repeat heart attack or stroke during the length of the study, compared with those with the least healthy diets, according to the five-year study of 32,000 people in 40 countries.

Statin-Exercise Combo Lowers Mortality Risk
Patients who took statins and were physically fit had as much as a 70% reduction in the risk of dying during the follow-up period as compared with the least physically fit patients who were taking statins, according to Peter Kokkinos, PhD, of George Washington University in Washington, and colleagues.
Physical fitness also had an independent effect on mortality risk among patients who were not taking statins, reducing the likelihood of death during follow-up by as much as 47%, they reported online in The Lancet.

Novel Circulating Fatty Acid Patterns and CVD Risk
Conclusions: PCA appears to provide informative circulating FA patterns. A pattern driven mainly by trans FA levels related to greater CVD risk in older adults and coronary atherosclerosis progression in women with IHD.

Livalo has a number of things going against it and at this point I cannot think of a single reason I would prescribe it unless someone can show it to have unique benefits as compared to more established statins.

Health Toll of Fast Food Spreads Eastward
Eating Western-style fast food on a regular basis significantly increased the risk of diabetes and coronary heart disease in a large Asian cohort, investigators reported.
The diabetes odds increased by 27% and CHD risk by 56% among Singapore residents who ate fast food at least twice a week.
The results changed little with overall dietary pattern, energy intake, or body mass index (BMI), as reported online in Circulation.
Red Yeast Rice: An Introduction NCCAM
Some red yeast rice products contain substantial amounts of monacolin K, which is chemically identical to the active ingredient in the cholesterol-lowering drug lovastatin. These products may lower blood cholesterol levels and can cause the same types of side effects and drug interactions as lovastatin.
Other red yeast rice products contain little or no monacolin K. It is not known whether these products have any effect on blood cholesterol levels.
Some red yeast rice products contain a contaminant called citrinin, which can cause kidney failure. In a 2011 analysis of red yeast rice products sold as dietary supplements, 4 of 11 products were found to contain this contaminant.

Declining Kidney Function Increases Prevalence of Sleep Apnea
Conclusions: Sleep apnea is common in patients with CKD and increases as kidney function declines. Almost 50% of patients with CKD and ESRD experience nocturnal hypoxia, which may contribute to loss of kidney function and increased cardiovascular risk.
