Medical News: Healthy Lifestyle Decreases Men’s Risk of Heart Failure – in Critical Care, CHF from MedPage Today

Male physicians who adhered to at least four of six healthy lifestyle factors — normal weight, abstinence from smoking, regular exercise, moderate alcohol intake, and consumption of breakfast cereals and fruits and vegetables — had a lower risk of heart failure, the study found.

  • Exercise level above the median

  • Better diet as defined by a higher fiber intake, higher polyunsaturated to saturated fat ratio, lower trans-fat intake and lower mean glycemic index

  • Never smoked

  • Light or moderate alcohol use

  • BMI <25

  • Waist circumference of 88 cm for women or 92 cm for men
