Hodgkin Lymphoma Survivors Need Long-Term Follow-Up for CVD | Medpage Today

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) survivors experience increased risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) for as long as 40 years after initial HL treatment, according to a Dutch study published online in JAMA Internal Medicine on April 27, 2015.

Furthermore, compared with the general population, HL patients run four- to almost seven-fold increased risks of coronary heart disease (CHD) or cardiomyopathy/congestive heart failure (HF) 35 years or more after treatment, resulting in 857 excess CV events per 10,000 person-years. More than half of patients with a CVD will experience multiple CV events over time.

Poisoning Deaths Involving Opioid Analgesics — New York State, 2003–2012

Comparison of opioid analgesic-related mortality between those enrolled or not enrolled in Medicaid shows considerably higher death rates and a more rapid increase in mortality among Medicaid enrollees. The consistently higher age-adjusted death rates for poisonings involving opioid analgesics among Medicaid enrollees (after stratifying data by sex) suggest that differences in age and sex distributions do not underlie these Medicaid/non-Medicaid differences. Other factors, such as the greater prevalence of mental illness and substance abuse in the Medicaid population (6), might contribute to the observed differences.

FDA Approves Bupropion/Naltrexone Contrave for Obesity

FDA Approves Bupropion/Naltrexone Contrave for Obesity.

If I’m understanding this correctly we now have an anti-depressant combined with a drug originally approved for treating opioid, then alcohol addiction, approved by the FDA to treat obesity.

This will be interesting.

UPDATE

Obesity drugs have side effects. The reason it’s taken three years for the FDA to approve NB32/Contrave is that obesity drugs have serious side effects. So serious, in fact, that several major diet drugs have been yanked from the market, making doctors, regulators and yes, investors shy away. Cardiovascular disease and mood problems are just two of the potentially serious side effects associated with Qsymia and Belviq. Older drugs Xenical  and Alli carry a risk of permanent liver and kidney damage.  And those weight loss supplements you buy over the counter? Some are deadly.

Like I said, this will be interesting.
