Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC)

Patients treated for Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) face a five-year recurrence rate of 40% — markedly higher than the recurrence rates for melanoma and other skin cancers, according to research published today in JAMA Dermatology.

Aggressive Skin Cancer Rates Skyrocketing – Merkel Cell Carcinoma

Park and colleagues estimated that there were roughly 2800 cases in the United States in 2010, but she said about 40% of these ended the patients’ lives. In comparison, mortality from melanoma is approximately 8%.
