The number of cases has risen steadily through April and as of April 23rd, there were more than 854 cases of pneumonia from the capital. Of those, 59 have died.

This situation bears close watch.  Pay attention to travel and pay particular attention if your US business comes from border states.

Kidnapping of US antikidnapping consultant rattles Mexico | csmonitor.com

The time I spent working in the international offshore life markets was interesting.  You learned quickly that some risks (CHD, cancer) are the same as US mortality while others were quite different.  Understanding the difference in mortality risks by country often IS the difference between profits or losses.

If you rent a movie this weekend, I recommend Man on Fire.  This film came out in 2004 and was directed by Tony Scott with Denzel Washington playing the lead role as a security guy.

Even Denzel didn’t get out alive.

Listen and Learn – Drugs and Death in Mexico

The U.S.-Mexican Border: A Changing Frontier : NPR

Several posts ago I wrote briefly about some of the problems our neighbor to the South is having with the illegal drug trade.  I did extensive work in this area while advising a US based life company on its possible entry into the Latin life markets.  This is a quick audio series that provides a good overview of what’s happening.   If you’re writing business on the border or in Mexico you need to know what’s happening in order to keep your risk assessment brain cells sharp.

I’ve been to Mexico quite a few times.  Bogota is safer now.
