I figured this stuff out back in 2001 when I took a position in Oklahoma City.
Nice to see the young folks are figuring it out too.
Great article. Read it here.

Conclusion
The results of this elucidating simulation, which dovetail with a growing number of studies based on real-world data, strongly suggest that luck and opportunity play an underappreciated role in determining the final level of individual success. As the researchers point out, since rewards and resources are usually given to those who are already highly rewarded, this often causes a lack of opportunities for those who are most talented (i.e., have the greatest potential to actually benefit from the resources), and it doesn’t take into account the important role of luck, which can emerge spontaneously throughout the creative process. The researchers argue that the following factors are all important in giving people more chances of success: a stimulating environment rich in opportunities, a good education, intensive training, and an efficient strategy for the distribution of funds and resources. They argue that at the macro-level of analysis, any policy that can influence these factors will result in greater collective progress and innovation for society (not to mention immense self-actualization of any particular individual).
Luck matters.
Somebody actually attempted to quantify this. Read the article and judge for yourself.

For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.
Luke 12:48 NKJV
Personal mastery goes beyond competence and skills, though it is grounded in competence and skills. It goes beyond spiritual unfolding or opening, although it requires spiritual growth. It means approaching one’s life as a creative work, living life from a creative as opposed to reactive viewpoint.

Every calling is unique. My calling is unique. I am a teacher, coach, mentor, writer, and…life underwriter.
A calling has certain preconditions that involve more than just desires. For your calling to be correct it requires the individual have the talent, unique abilities and skills for that particular calling. A true calling reveals itself through enjoyment and a sense of renewed energies when engaging in the calling. Underwriting is like being home. Writing is natural. Teaching is what I do. Your unique path is not easy to discover. I have traveled many false paths before uncovering MY path.
I hope you visit the website Black Men in White Coats. The world needs more people like this. Are you being creative or simply reactive?
Current US life expectancy is 78 years for men and 82 years for women, but for the low-risk group in this study, life expectancies were 85 and 89 years, respectively.

“Managers know who is a high performer and who is not—it’s not a secret. If you have people that you’re afraid if they’re working out of your sight, then they aren’t getting work done, why are they working for you in the first place? That’s not a ‘work remotely’ problem. That’s a management problem.”

Every city wants to have a strong local economy, high quality of life and housing affordability for its residents. Unfortunately these three dimensions represent the Housing Trilemma. A city can achieve success on two but not all three at the same time.

Check out the graphic above courtesy of the Oregon Office of Economic Analysis. I may have been biased about life in the middle but never had the facts to back up my opinions. But after reading this article I now have facts. This analysis demonstrates a city can have success on two fronts, but rarely on all three.
I started life in New York and grew up in New Jersey. A sizeable amount of time was also spent in Dallas. For over a decade I’ve held the belief that my family could not replicate our lifestyle and quality of life anywhere else in the country. Well, I admit to being wrong. We could probably do as well in Cincinnati, Omaha, or Des Moines.
