ADHD Drugs Top Rx for Kids
Prescription drug use in the pediatric population fell from 2002 to 2010, but the use of birth control and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications rose, the FDA reported.
Outpatient contraceptive prescriptions jumped 93% from 2002 to 2010 among kids 17 and younger, Grace Chai, PharmD, of the agency’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in Silver Spring, Md., and colleagues found.
ADHD drug scripts rose 46% over the same period in the national analysis of prescription databases reported in the July issue of Pediatrics.

Adderall contains four active ingredients – dextroamphetamine saccharate, amphetamine aspartate, dextroamphetamine sulfate, and amphetamine sulfate. Instead of these active ingredients, the counterfeit product contained tramadol and acetaminophen, which are ingredients in medicines used to treat acute pain.

The Conundrum Between Maturity and ADHD
A recent Canadian study showed that the youngest children in each grade (born in the earliest month of the Canadian grade cutoff: December) were 30% more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than the oldest children (born in January). For girls, who overall have a lower incidence of ADHD, the difference was even more pronounced: 70%.
Interestingly, the overall rate of ADHD diagnosis in the sampling of children from this Canadian study (900,000 children) was 6.9% for boys and 2.2% for girls. Rates of diagnosis here in the United States are much higher, creeping up on 10% of all children.

It does not require routine monitoring and has been approved by the FDA for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation. Note, however, that no effective reversal agent for dabigatran in the event of catastrophic hemorrhage has been identified.

FDA Adds Diabetes Warning to Statin Labels
The diabetes warning has been rumored as a possibility since the findings from the JUPITER trial of rosuvastatin revealed an unexpected 27% increase in new onset diabetes among patients randomized to the statin.That finding was especially perplexing because JUPITER was a study of statins in patients who had no history of cardiovascular disease, the so-called healthy patient trial. Moreover, based on the JUPITER results, the FDA approved rosuvastatin for primary prevention.The FDA said hyperglycemia was also observed among patients treated with 40-mg atorvastatin in a substudy of PROVE-IT TIMI 22, and a meta-analysis of data from 13 statin trials “reported that statin therapy was associated with a 9% increased risk for incident diabetes.”
